Synopsis:	Elf recaps: as an agent of the Tribunal, he sent the Defenders to
24th Century earth, which is barren, and they are to blame. (They defeated some
aliens, including the son of a warrior king; he retaliated.) The only way to
avoid this "collective karma" is if they disband.
	Moondragon had tried to force peace on an alien world; her father Drax (whom
she killed) and the Avengers stopped her; Thor had Odin judge her. He put a
headband on her to prevent her abusing her psionic powers, and gave her into
Valkyrie's care.
	All attend Patsy's marriage to Hellstrom, which is interrupted by her
ex-husband Mad-Dog and the Mutant Force. After a short fight, the villains are
captured, the pair are wed.
	Beast wants to reestablish the Defenders as a real team. Angel, Iceman,
Gargoyle, Valkyrie and even Moondragon join.

Synopsis:	The Defenders turn Mad-Dog and the Mutant Force over to SHIELD. Hank
notices a distinct lack of enthusiasm in the group; Warren and "Bob" notice
Moondragon.
	Hank has the team write its charter; Valkyrie and he have a spat over
leadership. Disgusted with such childishness, Warren flies off and finds
Leviathan, broken out of SHIELD's custody, tossing cars into the East River, and
eager to eat superheroes. The team catches up; Beast catches Angel who had been
thrown by Leviathan, who proceeds to defeat each member of the team. Isaac then
gets them to work together, and they fell the giant.
	Meanwhile, Mad-Dog and the Mutant Force have escaped.

Synopsis:	As part of Assistant Editors' Month, Ann Nocenti takes charge and has
a little fantasy.
	Iceman tells his parents he's a super-hero again, and they are angry and
afraid for him.
	The Secret Empire's head is Prof. Power, who blames Xavier for the loss of his
son's mind (and who now inhabits Matthew's body). He vows to avenge him on
Xavier's "children": the X-Men.
	Cloud is chased by the Secret Empire's robots and flees to the Defenders, who
previously encountered her as a villain (iss. 123). Moondragon sees her thoughts
and convinces her team to protect her. They destroy two of the robots, but three
more appear, overcome the Defenders, and take Cloud. The Drakes may have been
right.

Synopsis:	Their New York townhouse trashed (last iss.), the Defenders go to
Warren's house in New Mexico and consider disbanding.
	Moondragon relates Cloud's memories: the Secret Empire abducted Cloud from her
parents' home and brainwashed her to think that Seraph was her sister. When her
memory returned, she fled. Moondragon knows where the Secret Empire's
headquarters is. (She takes time to toy with Hank's mind, giving herself a big
headache courtesy Odin.)
	The Defenders fly to Virginia and total their borrowed Avengers' quinjet on
the Secret Empire's force field. Gargoyle, Iceman, and Moondragon break through,
are attacked by foot-soldiers, Mutant Force, and Leviathan. They are captured.
	Power explains that he had planned to kill the former X-Men, but has now
decided to make the Defenders kill the New Mutants, as vengeance against Xavier.

Synopsis:	The Defenders attack the New Mutants. Hank, Bobby, and Warren are
only half-hearted and are quickly defeated by Cannonball, Karma, and Xavier;
Valkyrie, on the other hand, has to be restrained by Gargoyle before she kills
Wolfsbane. Moondragon realizes this is all a sham; the Secret Empire has them
prisoners in force cubes and is trying to brainwash them.
	Power plans to launch a satellite which will subliminally heighten US-USSR
tensions and cause World War III. The Secret Empire will then take over the
remains of the world.
	Seraph is a Soviet double-agent, and she frees Cloud. Meanwhile, Moondragon
instructs Gargoyle to collect life-energy from the team, and direct it to her,
and she destroys the cubes. While they fight robots and Mutant Force, Power
escapes.
	They are unable to stop the launch, and Valkyrie and Moondragon cling to the
ascending rocket.

Story:	And in the End! (22 pages)

Synopsis:	Valkyrie and Moondragon attempt to disable the rocket they are
riding, while Mad-Dog corrects its course. Cloud zaps Mad-Dog with lightning, and
Moondragon overcomes Odin's headband and explodes the rocket. Angel and Gargoyle
catch their falling teammates, then they all defeat the Mutant Force.
	SHIELD arrives, Angel gives a homily on world peace, Cloud is angry at Seraph
for not saving her parents (see iss. 128), Moondragon calms her down, and
Valkyrie is suspicious of this evidence of compassion.
	Returning to Warren's home, they find Power already there, and they fight.
Moondragon reaches into his mind and wakes his son Matthew's consciousness. Power
collapses, insane.
	Candy plans the additions to their base; Warren struggles with his feelings
for her and for Moondragon. The team gets official government clearance, and
Beast gets a lecturing gig.

Story:	If This Be Walrus...! (22 pages)

Synopsis:	Crazy old Humbert zaps his nephew Hubert with omicron rays, giving
him the proportional strength of a Walrus.
	Hank is mobbed by fan-girls before his lecture; Bobby claims to be his
boyfriend Lance; jittery Hank throws up.
	He gets himself together, makes a grand entrance by bouncing around the
lecture hall, and clowning around while describing the life of a super-hero.
	Frog-Man has attended the lecture, hoping to join the Defenders, and bounces
on stage. The crowd shames them into giving the new guy a chance.
	Back in New Mexico, Candy confronts Moondragon about Warren, so she goes to
meditate on the bottom of the pool.
	The Walrus goes on a rampage; Uncle Humbert orders him to kill the Beast so
they can get on TV. He attacks and defeats the Defenders, but then the omicron
waves wear off, and the Frog-Man defeats him. But before he can join the team,
his father finds him wearing his old Leap Frog costume and drags him home.
	Angel lies to the crowd, telling them this was just a demonstration. The dean
tells Beast he'll have to pay for the damage.

Story:	The Phantom of Gamma-Ray Flats! (22 pages)

Synopsis:	Soles wanders the desert, dying, and comes across the remains of a
gamma bomb. He eats the lichen growing on it, and is forced to walk north.
	Bobby clowns with Cloud, and Moondragon accuses him of "subconscious hostility
towards women." Soles trips the alarm, and they bring him inside, where he
transforms from dying man to tentacled monster. Cloud and Gargoyle blast it, and
it explodes into muck. Valkyrie stabs the corpse, which sprout flowers, proving
that it wasn't a man any more. Bobby freezes the remains, while the rest clean
up.
	Warren finds a lichen growing on him; he flies up high enough for U-V rays to
kill it, then passes out for lack of oxygen. Bobby finds that the monster has
mutated again and broken out of the ice. Bobby, Gargoyle and Valkyrie can't stop
it, until Moondragon sees a great thirst in its vestigial mind. Bobby sticks his
arm out the window and forms ice, thereby dehydrating the room and killing the
monster, then he passes out for lack of moisture.
	Warren and Bobby recover; the monster is dormant, but spores waft away on the
breeze.

Date:	Jul-84
Story:	The Pajusnaya Consignment (22 pages)

Synopsis:	Thompson, stabbed in the back, floats in San Francisco Bay.
	Warren has a hazardous waste company detox the mansion. Meanwhile, he jets the
team to San Francisco for a vacation.
	In Chinatown, Martin goes to Cutlass (read: Sam Spade) and Typhoon for help.
He's been shot; he is killed by a knife thrown through the window. Cutlass chases
the assassin; Cloud spots him on the roof of a speeding cab; the team
investigates and interrupts him.
	Typhoon finds Swifty in a fleabag hotel and is attacked by ninjas. The
Defenders arrive and beat them off, but not before Cutlass is shot in the
shoulder, and Swifty stabbed to death (last words: "Treasure Island").
	Beast, continuing his college lecture tour, discusses Blake with Prof. Frye.
	Cloud hides inside the lungs of a ninja, leading them to the waterfront. They
confront the fat boss, who reveals the Pajusnaya Consignment is not illegal
caviar but illegal drugs. This time the ninjas run from the Defenders.
	Typhoon bites the bullet out of Cutlass's shoulder (I'm sure) and shows it is
bugged.
	They all go to the Golden Gate Bridge and watch the consignment arrive. Ozu
and the DEA intervene and find the cocaine; Cutlass shows that the plastic
wrapping is really computer tape (I'm sure) with vital defense info. Ozu is an
Outer Mongolian KGB spy.

Date:	Aug-84
Story:	Manslaughter! (221/2  pages)

Synopsis:	Hank returns and finds the Defenders tense: they've been getting
death threats. Cloud had received a garland of flowers with snakes hidden in it;
Angel had a note stuck to his back; Iceman was attacked by the weight machine,
branding a warning into his chest.
	A fiery pentagram appears around Gargoyle, and he vanishes with it.
	Manslaughter nabs Dragonfang from Valkyrie's side and confronts them; he was
hired by the cocaine boss (last iss.) to kill them. He explodes the TV and
vanishes.
	The Defenders spend the night guarding each other, but when Cloud goes to the
bathroom, Manslaughter jumps out of the shower and kills her. He subsequently
snaps Iceman's neck, gasses Angel, and poisons Valkyrie with her own sword.
	Moondragon mind-blasts him, but this only links their autonomic systems. He
cuts himself; she hurts.
	The Defenders reappear, alive, and capture the villain. They had fooled
Manslaughter into thinking he killed them all.
	Iceman has frozen Angel and Valkyrie until their poisons can be identified;
Manslaughter says he didn't make Gargoyle disappear. Moondragon is devastated by
the violation of her mind; Cloud comforts her, saying she loves her.

Date:	Sep-84
Story:	The Fire at Heaven's Gate! (21  pages)

Synopsis:	Medical helicopters arrive at Warren's Aerie to aid him and Valkyrie
(see last iss.). The sheriff of nearby Elijah resents the heroes.
	Beast and Sassafras toy with Manslaughter, captive in the kitchen. The sheriff
questions their right to make an arrest, but changes his tune when he hears from
Washington.
	A drunk tells Brand about the muties on the mountain. He can't be hurt by fire
and proves it by setting his clothing ablaze. Moondragon investigates but
realizes he is not a real threat. Cloud goes in his lungs and forces the oxygen
out; he collapses and is arrested.
	Candy nurses Warren and is skeezed out by Valkyrie. Cloud wrestles with her
feelings (for Moondragon, see last iss.); Gargoyle is a captive (see last iss.).
	A local sweatshop boss hires Brand to torch his building. He traps the workers
inside, so the sheriff calls on the Defenders to rescue them. They do; the
sheriff breaths flame while helping, and Valkyrie escorts him as he dies, a hero.

Synopsis:	An Afghani wizard has captured Gargoyle using a cantrip an a
pentagram amulet, and plans to use him to drive false faith from the world. He
forces him to use powers he didn't know he had to create gold, destroy attacking
Soviet helicopters, kill his own (heretical) people, and torture the Soviet
general.
	Moondragon give rest to a troubled Cloud, and snaps at Sassafras. Cloud
awakes, now a man, and declares his love for a startled Moondragon. Bobby is
especially disturbed by this transformation.
	Gargoyle takes the wizard to the US, and Moondragon senses him. The team
confronts the wizard, who calls on Gargoyle to defend him.
