Synopsis:	Tar sends mystic symbols after Gomurr, but
instead they turn on him. Kuragari announces
he is the new master of the Crimson Dawn.
Warren, enjoying his restored natural wings
(UXM 338), flys back to Betsy in his Soho loft,
with roses and Broadway tickets. But she's still
too shaken to go out (she was attacked by
Sabretooth in UXM 328 and healed by the
Crimson Dawn in 330).
Gomurr wanders the city, intangible, then
senses something. He finds Tar, who says
Kungari is back and then dies.
Betsy meditates, trying to get herself together,
when she hears a voice. She lunges into the
shadows and finds herself in the next room.
She creates her psychic knife and grabs
Warren, about to kill him. He settles her
down, and she says she was overtaken with
rage. Warren says he's been trying to help
her, but she just retreats into her own mind.
Kuragari plans to conquer the world, only
Betsy is in the way, and she is nearly insane.
He sends Undercloaks to her with a gift.
Logan visits Warren's apartment, to make
sure Betsy's okay. He points out that Warren
has undergone major changes, as well, and he
should just let Betsy heal her own way.
Warren flies him back to the Lower East Side,
then stands on the Empire State Building in
the rain and wonders if he's strong enough to
help her.
Betsy battles holograms of former foes:
Slaymaster (Capt. Britain 13), Spiral (New
Mutants Annual 2) and Matsuo (X-Men
II:32), and then nearly kills Doug Ramsey.
Then Undercloaks welcome her to the dark
side.

Warren flies home, having decided to tell
Betsy he loves her and that she needs
psychological help. Her dojo is on fire, and
she telepathically tells him to get away, but he
goes to help her fight off Undercloaks and gets
himself clobbered (still not readjusted to his
wings, he says). Betsy saves his pinfeathers,
brutally destroying the Undercloaks. She finds
a ring on the floor and tells Warren she can
take care of herself. Each of them recognizes
that her personality changed since the
Crimson Dawn, and they both wish she could
reach out to Warren for help.
Kuragari destroys the Undercloak who reports
the failure of the mission. At least they left the
ring, which will make Betsy his bride. He
looks into the vision pool to see what may stop
him: Warren.
That night, Warren has a dream of Betsy, who
says she doesn't know who she really is. He
realizes the ring is affecting her. She says she
is an Undercloak and attacks him, but
Gomurr's voice interrupts, identifying her as
Kuragari in disguise.
Warren wakes, and Betsy enters the room.
Gomurr is shocked to see her wearing the
ring, which she can't take off. Kuragari grabs
her, and battle ensues. Kurgari knocks
Warren and Gomurr back and drags Betsy
through the shadows.

marks his hands, making him the next
Proctor, saying their battles were just tests.
Gomurr goes to the Crimson Dawn, rescues
Warren, then takes him to the chamber of the
Ebon Vein. He says it's Warren's debt to repay,
not Betsy's: he took the stuff of life for her, so
he must give back from his heart.

Undercloaks submit to him. He sends mystic

Longshot Created By: Ann Nocenti, Arthur
Adams
Synopsis:	Longshot leaves the Mojoverse on a quest
through a nonsensical land. He comes across
the monster Thingee about to eat the tiny Nutt.
He throws blades, but the letters "HA-HA" of
the Thingee's laughter protect him, and he
swallows Nutt. Longshot goes in the maw
after him and explodes the Thingee from the
inside.
He felt queasy and insubstantial and was
sucked into a black portal. He found a gold
twister that he decided was the doorway to
heaven and nearly went through it, but then
backed away, realizing his soul was no longer
pure. The twister dumped him in the
cornfields near Baum, Kansas, to meet his
destiny. He realizes he can't be dead because
he's vomiting. He finds Nutt in his pocket, and
they start walking to New York, not realizing
Thingee is also on earth. They get directions
from some locals who laugh at them, and then
a little girl named Betty takes gives them a free
meal. Longshot touches her to read her mind,
and the ghost of her drowned brother Garret
appears, saying he wants her to be happy.
After Longshot leaves, Thingee attacks the girl,
and Longshot hears the screams, but Nutt
convinces him it's nothing.
Cops find him in a field the next morning:
Betty is catatonic, repeating his name. He
attacks the cops and gets away, but Garret
warns him the house is guarded, and his sister
is in a sanitarium in nearby Barrie.
Bea shells peas on her porch, and her dead
beau from fifty years ago shows up with
flowers and transforms her back to youth. But
he is Thingee, and he feeds on her.
	The cowardly Wilson catches Longshot
breaking into the sanitarium but then helps
him get to Betty. Longshot reads her mind and
sees Thingee. He gets her past Dr. Doctor,
fighting off his guards, and frees the rest of
the inmates. He mentally cleanses Betty, or a
gold twister does, and his own innocence is
restored, having been tested by suffering.
Thingee impersonates a couple of cops and
takes mental control of the sheriff, and they
attack. But Nutt tells Longshot to join all the
inmates together, and they purge Thingee
with their gold twister of hope, dreams, and
love. She departs, raining her grace on them.
They people she had eaten are restored, and
Longshot says his goodbyes, but the inmates
follow him, Dorothy-like, toward New York.

Synopsis:	Note: this occurs after X-Men II:87.
	The UN has given Genosha to Magneto;
human refugees flood into Wakanda, Cap
denounces appeasement, and Moira and
Haller see dark times ahead.
Magneto overlooks Hammer Bay, his half-
ruined capital, and plans empire. Magistrates
strafe him, but he stalls their jets and demands
they kneel. When they resist, he tries to stop
the blood flow to their brains, but he gets a
migraine. Before the pilots shoot him, a
mutate has the earth swallow them.
Huxley is Genosha's representative to the UN.
She is shrewd and realistic and has plans.
Voght was a nurse and Charles Xavier's lover.
Now she spies on Pietro as he saves a baby
from a fire in the American Midwest. He
confronts her, saying she's deluded for
believing in his father. He decides to confront
him, and she ports him to Genosha. Horrified
by the ruins, Pietro takes a quick tour. Zealot
picks him up on a surveillance camera and
plans to use him to gain control of the island.
Voght tells Pietro the UN only gave it to
Magneto to keep him busy, but he is its best
chance.
Rogue flies in, alone since the X-Men
disappeared (Uncanny X-Men 368). She
hopes to find the good in Magneto, as in the
Savage Land (Uncanny X-Men 274).
The mutates tell Magneto they captured the
magistrates' base and decrypted their
intelligence. He meets Moreau (the
Genegineer's son), Ransome (a mutate), and
Pipeline (a former magistrate), uneasy allies.
Huxley welcomes him; he suspects her
motives. Moreau warns him of Zealot, his
brother and a mutate, who has raised a
guerilla faction.
	Pietro goes to save a mutate from magistrates;
it's a trap, and she stuns him. Voght sees
Rogue arrive.
Magneto realizes his power is diminished, so
he goes to Cortez, whose power is to boost
powers. He forgives him for trying to kill him
(X-Men II:3), and Cortez reluctantly swears
allegiance.
Rogue sees mutates in a ruined church; Zealot
is holding a rally and has Pietro tied to a
cross.

Synopsis:	Zealot plans to kill Pietro as the first
victory
over Magneto. Rogue is about to intervene
when Voght stops her, saying they need to
plan first with Magneto.
A satellite explodes and falls to earth. Magneto
has destroyed it and condemns the UN for
spying on him, in violation of treaty. He
bashes it into a reconnaissance plane, then
graciously lets the UN search for survivors.
Voght and Rogue arrive and say Pietro has
been captured. Magneto refuses to help
because Pietro always spurned him, Amelia
failed to protect him, and he has no feelings
for Rogue. She refuses to believe him and
kisses him. In his mind she sees only
enormous hurt and something hidden and
sinister. Magneto gives her an hour to vacate
Genosha.
Rogue questions Ransome and Moreau; they
say they just want to rebuild their homeland.
Huxley pumps Cortez for information on
Magneto and his son.
Pietro broods in Genosha's Bastille. Voght and
Rogue pop in; Voght gets shot; Rogue and
Pietro whup on Zealot's mutates. They break
out, only to find more mutates.
Zealot tortures one of Magneto's mutates, to
cleanse him. Huxley tells Magneto he was one
of the first mutates, and the Genegineer's son.
Magneto is surprised everyone hasn't
welcomed his leadership.
Mutates spray-paint a scarlet L on the face of
a mutate with the Legacy Virus. Pietro stops
them and suggests compassion while showing
none. Zealot catches them and has the ill
mutate killed (before Pietro can react!).
Magneto's forces arrive, and Pietro finds
himself fighting alongside Cortez (his
daughter's kidnapper, X-Men II:26). Then
Magneto appears, energies flashing.

Synopsis:	Magneto has spurred anti-mutant protests
outside the UN and official protests within;
Huxley calls for patience.
Pietro realizes Magneto's power is out of
control and watches as he bowls over Zealot.
But Zealot can manipulate the island itself and
counter-attacks, while his mutates attack
Magneto's.
Apocalypse and ravens observe the carnage
with satisfaction.
Zealot crushes Magneto with dirt; Pietro gets
Cortez to augment his power and digs him
out. Moreau tries to reason with his brother
while holding a gun on him; he feels no
family bond except to his mutates and says
Magneto will destroy them all. Magneto
wraps him in metal and shoots him into
space. Rogue is appalled, but Pietro stops her
from doing anything, saying he can get
through to his father, even while rejecting his
methods. Voght takes him to see an
internment camp for mutates with the Legacy
Virus and says Magneto plans to expand by
force, and she's not sure she can continue to
support him. This helps Pietro make up his
mind.
Magneto assembles the human elite. Some are
allowed to remain; the rest are deported as
profiteers, and then the border closes. Pietro
confronts him, saying they can both agree to
stop anti-mutant bigotry. He chooses to
remain as his father's conscience, to keep
Genosha safe for humans. Magneto agrees.
Rogue recoils from them both, warns
everyone the X-Men will be watching, and
flies away.
Magneto congratulates Voght and plans to
mold Pietro in his image or kill him trying.

Synopsis:	Irene, a freelance reporter (see recent

Cable), goes to Salem to uncover the truth of
the witch trials. She has researched
extensively (but thinks a Congregationalist
pastor should be called "Father" and "Your
Grace"), and has uncovered a chronicle by
Obadiah Shaw. The current Reverend warns
her not to write the story, but then agrees to
tell her the whole thing.
In 1692: Rev. Hiram Shaw oversees the
burning of witches, while his son Obadiah
consorts with Abigail Harkness, whose family
is suspect. Hiram forbids him to see her again,
but he refuses to obey, so he accuses her of
witchcraft.
That night, the Dormammu pulls Hiram into
his dimension, knowing him to be the current
Sorcerer Supreme, and warns him to stop
preventing his access to earth. He says
Hiram's lust for power is the spark for mutant
battles to come.
Hiram is returned to his bed and finds his wife
Sarah horribly dead. He blames Abigail for it,
and she is condemned to death by hanging.
Obadiah breaks her out of gaol and plans to
sail with her from Boston to London. Hiram
leads men to chase them down, but Abigail is
a real witch, and she blasts the riders, while
Hiram chooses not to reveal his own power.
He then disappears, and Obadiah writes his
chronicle to protect future generations.
Irene leaves; somebody shoots the Reverend.

In 1780: Philadelphia is reeling from Benedict
Arnold's betrayal, and paranoia is running
high. Elizabeth Shaw is a guttersnipe recently
arrived from England, and when she looks in
a tailor's shop at the dresses, Grey takes her
in, to the Hellfire Club, as her protÈgÈ.
The Hellfire Club wants to turn General
Worthington, the city's new commandant.
They use Elizabeth as bait, and he takes it,
marrying her after a brief courtship.
The Revolutionary War continues, with the
rebels aided by Capt. America and Ulysses
Bloodstone. Elizabeth actually falls in love
with her husband, and Grey berates her for
not stealing military secrets. She leads the
Hellfire Club to Worthington to collect the
debt she owes, and there is gunplay. Rogers

himself to be Capt. America, and rescues
Worthington. Elizabeth apologizes to him as
he dies, saying he told the Hellfire Club
nothing.
Warren tells Irene not to let ambition get the
