Synopsis:	Anti-mutant demagogue Kelly is in fear of
his life. In his home in Arlington he waves a gun at
an intruder, but it is Scott, whom he called for help.
Most of the X-Men are in the Blackbird, hovering
cloaked over the Pentagon. Bobby wonders why the
government team X-Factor isn't handling this, but they
are busy (with the Hound program, X-Factor 122-123).
Remy and Jean sneak in to Operation: Zero Tolerance.
They know how to avoid the mutant detectors, since
Forge made them, and Jean is psionically making them
look like military officers.
In Colorado, Warren and Betsy recuperate and work
out. Her perceptions are heightened since the Crimson
Dawn, and in the shadows she senses a psionic cry for
help and is overwhelmed.
Bastion addresses collected ambassadors, announcing a
unified international anti-mutant force. Jean doesn't
sense a mind in him. Bastion warns of Onslaught, a
mysterious force causing problems worldwide.
Kelly explains to Scott that the operations he
backed, however desperate, never aimed at mutant
genocide. He warns him of a new, international group;
then Graydon's thugs burst in, the room explodes, and
Kelly is silenced.
Xavier mentally listens to Bastion's speech, although
he hadn't been able to before. Bastion pulls a gun;
Jean is unable to grab him telepathically, so she and
Remy run for it. Remy blasts through a wall, and they
find soldiers all over the ground, unconscious.
Onslaught appears, but only to Jean, saying it is a
gift from him.
Betsy wakes, but the form in the shadows (Juggernaut)
is about to break through.
	Note: Jean's story is continued in X-Men II:53;
Scott's in X-Force 55.

Synopsis:	Juggernaut is waiting in the lake for Jean
and Scott to return home. He's afraid for the first
time in his life, over Onslaught (who knocked him all
the way from Canada to Hoboken, iss. 322). He finds an
underwater security camera and smashes it.
Bishop is repairing Cerebro (X-Men II:51) and talking
to Remy: he's glad Sinister confirmed that his
memories of the AOA are real (X-Men II:52). Remy
wonders why Xavier wasn't able to do that. The
computer alerts them to a "subaqua" intruder.
Scott is unwinding in the Danger Room, with live
ammo. Jean is rattled and tells him she met Onslaught
(X-Men II:53), but the memories are already fading. He
wants her to talk to Xavier; she wants some time to
think.
In Colorado, Warren and Betsy are unable to contact
Westchester to warn them about Juggernaut.
Sam talks to Xavier, doubting himself after Genesis
(Wolverine 100). Xavier tells him to just leave; he's
too busy with real problems to worry about him, and
dismisses him.
Remy and Bishop investigate. Remy: "We got a mansion
in Westchester where we get to hang out all day wit'
friends and the closest thing any of us have t'family,
and we get to use all dis way-cool technology t'help
in fightin' de bad guys. ... I mean, if de entire
world didn't fear and hate us and want all mutants
dead, we'd be having the time of our lives."
Juggernaut jumps out of the water and easily flicks
them away. "Is it me... or do they not make X-Men like
they used to?quot;
Dark Beast is examining Logan and having a hard time
trying to match the real Hank's brilliance, so he lets
Logan go. Ororo is concerned, then Sam comes to her,
wanting to talk about Xavier.
Bastion berates Graydon for attacking Kelly.
Jean goes home and finds Remy and Bishop unconscious
on the porch. Juggernaut says he could have killed
them, but he's not there to cause trouble. He has the
secret to Onslaught trapped in his head and needs her
to get it out. He removes his helmet, as a sign of
good faith.
Xavier remembers that Nate forced his astral body
into the physical world (X-Man 10), which let him do
what he's doing now. He calls Scott in to tell him
what a disappointment he has been. Scott doesn't let
himself get rattled; Xavier turns out to be a
hologram; the real Xavier is in his study and says it
was just a test.
Jean takes Juggernaut deep below the mansion to a
psi-shielded chamber (cf. the Z'Nox, iss. 65), where
they can work.

Synopsis:	Jean sends a distress message (recorded for
posterity, later brought back from the future by
Bishop, UXM 287, Apr-92).
Xavier sits in his chair, tosses an old picture of
him and Magneto in the fire, and waits for his X-Men
to assemble. Jean tells Scott to trust her and keeps
her telepathic shields up, knowing she's the only one
who stands a chance.
Xavier retells what they know of Onslaught so far,
while Jean tries to probe his mind, but he has locked
her out. Xavier says he made a mistake: the dream was
an illusion, and he means to take control now. The
X-Men immediately ask him what he means, exactly; Jean
realizes Juggernaut is trapped in the Cyttorak gem, as
a paperweight on Xavier's desk. She tries to mentally
warn the team, but it is too late: Xavier
telepathically muzzles her, then transforms into
Onslaught. He says Xavier created him from his fear,
frustration, rage, and every dark desire. He orders
the X-Men to follow him to set the world right by
force; Scott says that sounds like Magneto. He lashes
out, playing with Logan, Bobby, and Ororo's minds;
Scott blasts him, to his surprise. He insists he truly
is Xavier, as well as Mmm..., which is why he didn't
just kill them all. He departs, leaving them
psionically frozen. Gambit charges the floor, which
causes interference and releases them, but of course
it explodes the floor.
	Jean says Onslaught isn't as in control as he thinks;
she relates her first encounter with him (X-Men
II:53), saying part of Xavier's mind was trying to
warn her. Bishop realizes this is the X-Men traitor.
Scott sends the team to secure the ready room files
and Cerebro, so Onslaught can't recruit a new team.
Dark Beast tries to figure out how to turn this to his
advantage.
The Fantastic Four eats breakfast; Franklin has a new
invisible friend, Charlie, who tries to recruit him.
The X-Men see that Xavier had brought up files on
Franklin Richards and Nate Grey, then Onslaught panics
Sam's mind, and he blasts around the room, destroying
the equipment. Onslaught returns, accuses them of
betraying him, and lashes out. He tells Bishop he
needed his memories to learn from Apocalypse how to
conquer the world.
Nate Grey has gone to the Avengers to warn them. They
hesitate to believe Xavier has gone bad, but decide to
go to Westchester to see for themselves.
Dark Beast downloads Cerebro; Bobby ignores normal
perceptions, senses body heat, and catches Onslaught.
But Xavier knows his students, and he makes Scott
blast Jean, Bobby, and then himself. Dark Beast is
quick to submit; Xavier knew he wasn't Hank from the
moment he entered the mansion and masked his
psi-signature from the others. Onslaught stumbles,
saying Xavier is resisting him, then taps Jean's mind,
which had been the template for the Phoenix force.
Onslaught tells Dark Beast to dispose of the X-Men,
but he wants to experiment on them.
Jean escapes to the Z'Noxx chamber to send a distress
call. Onslaught interrupts and blasts her. The dream
is dead. But then an optic beam blasts Onslaught; the
X-Men have regrouped, and battle ensues. They kill
Onslaught.
But then he is behind them, blasting away. He knocks
them all down, eventually even Bishop. When they wake,
Onslaught and Dark Beast are gone. They confer: Ororo
also notes that Onslaught is a lot like Magneto. Scott
says Xavier formed the X-Men to stop out-of-control
mutants, and they may need to kill him.
Somewhere in middle America, Sentinels are being
readied.

	Note: here's a line-by-line comparison of Jean's
message with Bishop's faulty recording:

Synopsis:	Note: this is part of Onslaught Phase 1.
Ozymandias: blind but sees all; stone but with fire
in his veins. Apocalypse, once his slave, now his
master, has awakened (last seen X-Men II:16, Jan-93).
He immediately notices Xavier and Magneto have united.
He says the age of wonders and of heroes is near its
end, and Uatu, sorrowful, arrives to observe.
The Avengers fly to Westchester and see the mansion
in ruins. Nate still senses the X-Men are alive,
except for Xavier. They come under attack, and
Quicksilver races to confront Remy; Bishop pulls a gun
on him; the Scarlet Witch rumbles the ground under
him. The Avengers explain they just want to help, and
to know what happened.
Ororo throws a lightning bolt; the rest of the X-Men
are behind her. Jean starts to scan the Avengers'
minds, to make sure they're still the good guys. Nate
breaks through psi-plane interference and painfully
pulls memories of Onslaught from the X-Men. Scott
arrives and blasts him, then debriefs in the more
traditional verbal format. He says Xavier has become
Onslaught; Nate says he always knew he was evil (X-Man
10); Logan goes for his throat.
In Scotland, Moira assembles Excalibur and says the
key to stopping Onslaught may be the Xavier Protocols
(see Excalibur 100). Jean, Scott, Warren and Betsy
plan to fly there.
Bishop replays Jean's distress call, blames himself
for not realizing Xavier was the threat, and
apologizes to Remy. X-Force arrives in Westchester to
guard Nate; Ororo says they need to find and protect
Cable; Cap says they need to warn the Fantastic Four
that Onslaught wants Franklin. Logan goes off on his
motorcycle, playing a hunch (Wolverine 104).
Onslaught is in Manhattan; Dark Beast promises him
attendants.

Hulk's underground safe house. Then he goes off to
destroy Cable. She is hallucinating: this already
happened.
Hulk jumps and lands in a magazine warehouse; he is
about to pound Cable but gets mesmerized by a pin-up
calendar of "Betti Page." Cable takes advantage and
enters Hulk's mind, leaving his body defenseless to
the T-O virus. He dodges a psychic boulder, forces
open a psychic door, then gets knocked down a psychic
void. He wakes; Hulk rears up; Storm sends a whirlwind
to save him; Hulk throws pavement at her and she lands
in the bay.
Cable can't get bystanders to help him and remembers
a time in his youth (in the far future) that he acted
the same way. Then he spots a gun store. He shoots a
gas cylinder at Hulk, but he leaps away.
In the safe house, Ajax arrives and is surprised to
find see Janis.

threaten the Brotherhood to keep them in line, and she
still fears him. Pietro insists he will protect her.
Rogue and Joseph hooked up in South Carolina (X-Men
Unlimited 11), then their car broke down, and they
walk along a pier. She is attracted to him, but she
doesn't want him to learn too much to quickly, or he

Synopsis:	Note: this is part of Onslaught Phase 1.
Charlie has Franklin recreate the circus where
Magneto met Magda, training him to concentrate and
fight the pain to keep it going. Magda warns him to
leave the innocent boy alone, then the illusion fades
and they are back in Franklin's room. The FF are back;
Charlie reminds Franklin to keep him secret.
Reed gets a visit from Prof. X while Lang answers a
call from the Black Widow, warning them about
Onslaught, who puts Lang to sleep.
Prof. X asks the FF to give him Franklin for safe
keeping, but they refuse. Lyja takes her erstwhile
husband Johnny aside to confess that she is also his
new girlfriend Laura Green, but they are interrupted
when Lockjaw ports in with Iceman, Crystal, Bishop,
and Hawkeye. Prof. X reveals himself to be Onslaught
and attacks.
The communications are out; Crystal finds Lang
unconscious; Johnny flames the room to detect
Onslaught hidden in the corner. Overconfident, he
attacks Onslaught, who mentally takes control of
Crystal to put out his flame, then diverts him into
the ceiling, then makes Crystal think she has been
transported into empty space.
Nathaniel Richards attacks, but the psionic armor he
made to siphon Franklin's power doesn't work fast
enough, and Onslaught shatters it. He finds Lyja
disguised as Franklin but isn't fooled, and defeats
her, Ben, and Hawkeye. Sue and Bishop search
Franklin's room; Onslaught is toying with their
perceptions and then attacks them. Bishop has Sue hit
him with her strongest force field and redirects it to
blast Onslaught, actually stopping him. He reverts to
Prof. X's form and thanks them for rescuing him. But
it's a ruse; he takes Bishop's hand and blasts.
Apocalypse and Uatu observe from across the river in
Jersey.
Franklin sees nothing but his playmate Charlie, even
as Reed bashes Onslaught and demands he leave his son
alone. Johnny picks up Lyja from the floor, says he
figured out she is Laura, and kisses her.
Charlie/Onslaught extends his hand for Franklin to go
with him; Sue rallies the heroes to attack him
simultaneously. Onslaught is staggered, but then
blasts the top off Four Freedoms Plaza and takes
Franklin away.

Inside Onslaught, Franklin tries to get "Doctor X" to
help him, but Xavier is catatonic. Onslaught reappears
and wants Franklin's help; Franklin says he doesn't
want to conquer the world.
Uatu and Apocalypse observe and discuss the
situation. Blue lips is impressed with the amount of
damage Xavier has caused. Uatu tells him Onslaught is
a new form of life, and that gets him thinking about
his own survival.
Reed has collected data on Onslaught and returns to
the lab. The X-Men, Avengers and Fantastic Four battle
Onslaught's citadel and rescue civilians. Joseph is
surprised to see the humans are afraid of him; Remy
tells him he's not responsible for Magneto's crimes;
Rogue hugs Remy to thank him for that.
Iron Man rouses himself after Onslaught's E-M pulse
(X-Men II:55) and uses the plans Scott brought to make
psionic armor.
Sue Richards is impatient: her boy is in there. Scott
gets her to wait, then Ororo shows up with Cable.
Xavier wakes up and tells Franklin not to help
Onslaught. Onslaught says he has grown beyond Xavier,
and he no longer has his telepathic powers. Then
Joseph attacks Onslaught from the outside; he and
Xavier each vow to kill him. Onslaught lets the heroes
see Xavier, to show he is no longer him. But that
gives them freedom to attack. Cable mentally enhances
Joseph's magnetism; Scott removes his visor to blast
full force; Sue uses her force field to pry open the
resulting crack; then Thor swoops in and rescues
Xavier.
That should end things, but instead Onslaught
declares his freedom. He has the combined powers of
Xavier, Magneto, and Franklin, and sends a second
blast wave across the city. Sue and Cable erect
shields to protect the heroes.

son in.
Franklin, inside Onslaught, tries to telepathically

stopping him, but then decides to just twist it.
Philip and Alicia Masters show up, wanting to help.
Kristoff has Cassidy for safekeeping, but Kang shows
up and blasts him, to kill his enemy Doom's heir.
Kristoff strikes him, and he disappears into mist.
Alicia chats with Ben, but a stone villain appears and
attacks; Psycho-Man made it to feed off Ben's own
negative emotions. Lyja apologizes to Johnny for

attack them. Then Blastaar, the Wingless Wizard, the

to build a psionic dampener to prevent any more
villains popping up.
	Doom arrives and tells Johnny to escort him to Reed;
Agatha Harkness arrives and dispels Malice, who was

remaining villains disappear. Sue and Reed gather all

Synopsis:	Uatu has watched the rise humanity and the
age of heroes, and now his job is done.
Xavier, powerless, confronts Onslaught, and predicts
his downfall because he has no humanity. The X-Men
arrive and attack, the battle is fierce, and Onslaught
fells them all. But then the Avengers and Fantastic
Four arrive, and battle continues.
Xavier goes to rescue Joseph; they must stand
together against their creation. Inside Onslaught,
Franklin teams up with Nate Grey to stop him.
Onslaught, meanwhile, uses their powers to create a
second sun, which will devastate life on earth. Cable
connects to Nate and Franklin telepathically; he
suggests using Joseph's magnetic powers to reroute
Xavier's brain to reactivate his powers. Doom has
Vision merge with Rogue to enhance both their powers;
Logan, Namor and Giant Man punch a hole in Onslaught's
force field, and they go in but bounce harmlessly off
Onslaught. Suddenly, he bellows with fury. Hulk has
Jean turn off the Banner part of his mind, and he
attacks Onslaught savagely.
The heroes regroup and attack in melee. Onslaught and
Hulk fight so hard, Banner is knocked clear from Hulk,
and Onslaught's armor is cracked, so he is no longer
physical but just psionic, which is what he wanted all
along. Thor flies into him, to become his physical
vessel, but even he can't contain him all. The
Avengers, FF, and Hulk join in, draining the energy
with their own bodies. Reed has the mutants hold back,
since their bodies seem to help Onslaught. Hawkeye and
Iron Man catch Doom trying to siphon off some of the
energy, and fly into Onslaught.
Once everyone is in, the X-Men attack, and Onslaught
implodes. Nate and Franklin barely make it out; no one
else returns, and they are presumed dead. Nate: "Did
we win?quot; Joseph: "I think it will depend on who you
ask."
Xavier tries to comfort Franklin (who has actually
put all the heroes into an alternate universe in his
toy ball, for the Heroes Reborn series).
Apocalypse watches with Uatu and says it's his turn
next.
